At Woodcraft Kids, we strive to build more than just cool projects; we are on a mission to build confidence, leadership and community amongst the youth in a screen-free environment! Students can work together or independently to create things that bring joy to our schools, homes, and each other. Woodcraft Kids believes that when children build with determination and perseverance, they help make the world a better and more creative place.
Woodcraft Kids introduces students to the fundamentals of tool use through hands-on woodworking, practical building techniques, and applied math.
All beginners start by making a classic spin top or a simple toy car. These first projects will build confidence while teaching safe and effective use of our hand tools.
As students progress, they move on to a curated selection of guided projects which include things like birdhouses, toy boats, and jewelry boxes. Eventually, students will be encouraged to design and build their own unique ideas allowing for a greater level of creativity, independence, and pride in their hard work.
Unlike many “plug-and-play” activities, woodworking doesn’t always go perfectly, and that’s where the real learning happens. Students are guided to troubleshoot mistakes, adjust their plans, and keep going towards the finish line. This process builds the perseverance, patience, and confidence needed to tackle real world challenges.
Throughout the program, students gain experience with traditional tools such as carpenter’s braces, eggbeater drills, try squares, hand saws, hammers, and clamps in a safe, and supportive environment.
More than just a class, Woodcraft Kids helps students develop focus, problem-solving skills, and the resilience that comes from creating something real with their own hands, and the best part is we have a blast doing it the whole time!
As a Bay Area native raised by a strong, loving mother who immigrated from Guatemala, I learned early on the value of hard work, creativity, and resilience. My mom had a special kind of magic in her hands when she was working with wood. In our garage, with just a block of wood, she found peace. Through all the ups and downs of life, woodworking was her happy place, and I grew up watching her turn this peace she’d found into tangible beauty with patience, focus, and love.
Years later, a friend introduced me to the concept of sharing those skills with children, and something clicked. In today’s fast-paced, screen-heavy world, kids need a place to slow down, get their hands on real tools, and build something they can be proud of. That’s why I started Woodcraft Kids.
Woodcraft Kids is much more than an afterschool program, it’s a space for kids to unplug, tap into their creativity, and gain confidence through hands-on building. Every project is a chance for them to feel grounded, focused, and proud of what they’ve made. For me, it’s a deeply personal joy to share a craft that helped shape my childhood and gave my mom so much peace.
